Research use: Useful for linking families, since French troops often brought wives and families, and those Tunisians who did serve with the French usually provided family information in their dossiers.
Record type: Lists of French troops who served in Tunisia; also some Tunisia troops who served with the French armies in Africa or Europe. Time period: 1881 to 1956.
Content: Age, family names, date of enlistment for officers and enlisted men; places of origin or enlistment for French troops, village locations for Tunisian troops, marital status, names of wives and children.
Location: National Archives in Tunis; departmental archives in the various departments of Tunisia; also, for French troops some are found in the military archives in Paris and in regional military archives.
Population coverage: Estimated to be 70% of French colonial troops, and approximately 10% of the native Tunisian population.
