Census and Household Population Registers
Research use: Verifies family linkages from other records, shows relationships, places of birth of parents, previous residence, extended families. After 1956 can be used as a substitute for civil registration.
Record type: Census enumerations, population and family registers.
Time Period: 1909-present.
Content: Names of residents, relationship to head of house; sex, sometimes place of birth, race, civil status, military status, literacy status. Family registers after 1956 include detailed birth and marriage data for all family members.
Location: National Archives, National Civil Registration Office, local prefecture archives. National archives copies prior to 1972 may have been destroyed.
Population coverage: 70%.
