Skåne was first mentioned in the 9th century in written sources. In the 10th century, it came under the kingdom of Denmark, remaining part of it until 1658, when all Danish lands east of Øresund came under the Swedish Crown in the Treaty of Roskilde. This was later confirmed by other Treaties. After the Battle of Helsingborg, Denmark failed in a final attempt of invasion. The period 1658-1720 is marked by severe violence of the Swedish and Danish military against the local population, which kept going much longer on to a lesser extend. Formally, Skåne became part of Sweden on 3 July 1720. First local governments were formed in 1863.
The population of Skåne was roughly 1,322,200 people in 2016.
