As of the 1991 census, the population of Yugoslavia stood at 10,394,026. Of that total 5.8 million lived in Serbia, 2 million in each of the autonomous provinces of Vojvodina and Kosovo, and 600,000 in Montenegro. Ethnically these were broken down into 63% Serbs, 17% Albanians, 5% Montenegrins, 3% Hungarians. As of 1996 there were 600,000 registered refugees in Yugoslavia from Croatian and Bosnian territories.
