  • Santiago was founded on February 12, 1541 by the conquistador Pedro de Valdivia with the name of Santiago de Nueva Extremadura.
  • Until 1891, the Province of Santiago was administratively divided into the departments of Santiago, Melipilla and La Victoria, which in turn were subdivided into urban and rural sub-delegations.
  • In 1928 the commune of Santiago was created.
  • In 1981, due to the administrative reorganization of the country and the city, the commune of Santiago was divided forming new communes of Recoleta, Central Station and Independence.
  • The commune of Santiago has a population of approximately 201,000 people.[1].
