SAFFRON-HILL, a liberty and a sub-district in Holborn district, Middlesex; all forming a dense and central portion of the metropolis. The liberty adjoins the liberties of Hatton-Garden, Ely-Rents, and Ely-Place; and the four liberties comprise 30 acres. Pop. of the four, in 1851, 8,728; in 1861, 7,148. Houses, 643. A district church was built in 1832, called St Peter Saffron Hill. The sub-district contains also the Charterhouse and St. Sepulchre-without-Newgate, and comprises 60 acres. Pop. in 1851, 13,837; in 1861, 12,012. Houses, 1,105.
