Northumberland was origionally granted on October 20, 1761 as Stonington. Ten years later, in 1771 it was regranted as Northumberland. In modern history (2013) the town is also known as Groveton. The name of Groveton is said to come from a large grove of maple trees that used to stand near the center of town's railroad station. At first it was Grove Town, and later shortened to Groveton.
The town is bounded by Stratford, NH to the north; Stark, NH to the east; south by Lancaster, NH and the west by the state of Vermont. Officially the name of the town is Northumberland. Some town services carry that name, and others, like the town clerk, go by the name Groveton.
