Brief History

Northampton, originally called Nonotuck was founded by settlers from Springfield, Massachusetts in 1654. The original purchase from the Indians of Northampton included territory now known as Northampton, Easthampton, Westhampton, Southampton, and parts of Hatfield and Montgomery. The land purchased from the Indians cost about $200.00 in wampum and was about 100 square miles. The purchase was organized and completed by John Pynchon, Elizer Holyoke and Samuel Chapin. The oldest cemetery in Northampton is the Bridge Street Cemetery.

Famous Residents

Northampton's most famous residents were 18th Century preacher Jonathan Edwards and was the home and place of death of United States President Calvin Coolidge.
