Burgess rolls and guild records (Registres de bourgeoisie et corporations de métiers)

Research use: Sometimes a useful linkage tool where several generations are listed.

Record type: Citizen lists and inhabitants of a given town; lists of persons entitled to the rights, privileges, and protection of a town or community.

Time Period: 1100-1800.

Content: Names, ages, sometimes social and economic status of citizens, occupations, town of origin, dates when citizenship rights in a town were acquired, sometimes family relationships.

Public officials and government employee records (Dossiers personnels des fonctionnaires)

Research use: Primarily for family relationships and to extend lineage beyond other existing records.

Record type: Personnel records of government employees and officials.

Time Period: 1525-present.

Content: Names, genealogies, biographies of public officials, clergy, rabbis, doctors, businessmen, notaries, artisans, professors, etc.

Location: Municipal archives.

Population coverage: 20%.

Reliability: Good.[1]
