Video Tape to Digital File Conversion

Lehi Utah FamilySearch Center Family Area

In our Video Tape Conversion Room, we provide a Video Tape to Digital File conversion.

Bring in your VHS and Compact VHS (VHS-C) tapes and we will help you convert to digital video files which can be taken home on your own personal External USB drive. If you bring in your own video camera for other tape formats, we will help you connect for the conversion process.

Scheduled time on our equipment is for two and a half hours. The conversion is made in real-time and a typical VHS tape has a play-time of two hours. This provides 30 minutes to get set up at the beginning and to transfer the captured digital video files to your external USB drive at the end. Please plan your time accordingly to be completed by the end of your 2 1/2 hour session.

Recommendations to make your conversion session most productive

Rewind your video tapes to the beginning or to your desired start location before you arrive.
Bring an external USB drive to store your digital video files (we recommend more than a small thumb drive)
If you bring in your own video camera, we need to connect with RCA (yellow, red & white) cables or an SVideo cable. Bring your camera cable.
Do not bring tapes with commercial content or copyrighted material; only family-related videos.

Details that may help you

Our equipment captures the video in an .mpg video format (MPEG 2). We will also provide an .mp4 (MPEG 4) format.
A two-hour video will need about 8GB of USB storage for the .mpg format and 2GB for the .mp4 format.

You can easily break your video into smaller topic-based segments during the conversion - birthday party, vacation, graduation, etc.
The result is small subject-based videos that can be uploaded to Social Media (Facebook), loaded on your phone, or easily shared with family & friends.

While the digital video files will provide your best option to play and share your video memories,
we can create a DVD during the conversion if needed.
Please bring your own blank DVD discs (DVD+R or DVD-R types).
Recommended brands are Verbatim DVR+R or DVD-R 8x, Maxwell DVD+R 4x/8x/16x or DVD-R 8x/16x, Sony DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, TDK DVD+R 4x/8x/16x.
