Calendar and Events
The Temple and Family History Center will be closed to the general public on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, for a special class. We will be open the rest of our normal hours that week.
If your organization desires special family history training, please contact us to discuss options. Our Temple and Family History Consultants are available for instruction anywhere in Leavenworth county.
The Center trains volunteers in family history research and in Family Search Indexing, plus the use of the premium research websites available at the Center, and welcomes those interested in volunteering.
- IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: As of 1 September 2017, microfilms and microfiche will no longer be available for loan through the Temple and Family History Center. Progress digitizing the collection held by the LDS Church is rapid, and all records in those holdings should be digitized by 2020. Permanent loan films and fiche will still be available after September 1, but we do not know how long we will get to keep those, or the readers we have, after that date. As of now, the last day for ordering films or fiche will be 31 August 2017.
- Please check in to this page occasionally so we can keep you posted.
- FamilySearch Catalog: The Center has the ability to view films and fiche available through the FamilySearch Catalog.
- The Center has a sizeable collection of items on microfilm and microfiche, not yet digitized, on permanent loan from the FamilySearch Catalog.
- The Center owns a collection of microfilms of early records from Leavenworth area funeral homes. We are working on digitizing these into a permanent format, for use after we no longer will have our film/fiche readers.
- We have bound copies of data collections (state censuses, naturalization records, marriage records, etc.) from Leavenworth and surrounding counties in Kansas.
- We also own bound collections of county and state genealogical society newsletters, which contain lists and other excellent information hiding among their pages.
Databases and Software
- FHC Portal The Center has access to the Family History Center Portal page which gives free access in the center to premium family history software and websites that generally charge for subscriptions.
Hardware and Equipment
- The Center has two microfiche/microfilm readers and six computers available for Family History research. The film and fiche readers will be phased out once the collection the Center films from becomes completely digitized--target date of 2019. The last day to order microfilms or microfiche is 31 August 2017.
- Patrons may also bring their own laptop or tablet computers for personal family history or research.
- To protect our computer systems and patrons, and to maintain a family-friendly environment, Internet access is limited by filtering software and Internet activity may be monitored.
- Users should have no expectation of privacy when accessing the Internet from the Family History Center. Anyone engaging in any activity deemed inappropriate by family history center staff will be asked to leave.
