Lewis and Clark were the first expedition to enter Paradise Valley in 1803.
Dr. Bridwell with others bought land in 1905 from the Nez Perce Indians. Bridwell built a house and a store in the area. At various time a post office, medical office, Telephone Company, hotel, and bank established a lively town.
Kamiah lies along the Lewis and Clark Highway which is the shortest route from the Midwest to the Pacific Coast. It is also the longest highway within a national forest in the nation and opens the opportunity to enjoy sightseeing along the beautiful Lochsa and Clearwater Rivers where mountain goats, elk, deer and other wild animals can frequently be spotted. The Appaloosa horse was first bred here, primarily for use as a war animal.
