County Information


The County was named for the Dakota word meaning "knife" and refers to the Santee tribe. The County is located in the east central area of the state. [1]

Record Loss

2011 About 70 percent of archives in the historical society building were destroyed by fire. Destroyed documents include church records, family histories, cemetery records, 1800s plat maps.

There is no known history of courthouse disasters in this county.
