Missions were established by religious denominations to serve the Indians.

  • Cataldo Mission
  • Sacred Heart Mission (Jesuit) 1842-1960
  • St Joseph's Mission (Jesuit) 1874-1958

Denominations in Idaho[edit | edit source]

Before 1900 the largest religious groups in Idaho were The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), the Roman Catholic, the Methodist Episcopal, and the Presbyterian churches.

The Idaho State Archives has a significant collection of Episcopal church records. They also have an index to Catholic records. The Family History Library and the Church History Library have records of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Idaho as well as a few records of other churches. Early, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Church records for Idaho Wards and Branches can be found on film and are located at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. The film numbers, for each ward, can be located through the FamilySearch Catalog, or by referring to Jaussi, Laureen R., and Gloria D. Chaston. Register of Genealogical Society Call Numbers. 2 vols. Provo, Utah: Genealogy Tree, 1982. (FHL book 979.2258 A3j; fiche 6031507). These volumes contain the film numbers for many (but not all) membership and temple record films.

Society of Friends (Quaker)[edit | edit source]

Local congregations of the Society of Friends are members of the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends. A concentration of their churches exist in the Boise Valley, with some in Northern Idaho. Each of the local churches maintain records of births, marriages, deaths, transfers of memberships, and memorials, often compiled by a Recording Clerk or someone appointed by the local church.
