In Hong Kong registration of births and deaths actually began in 1842, but was not required by law until 1883; marriage records were not required by law until 1971, earlier marriage records are incomplete and mainly for Europeans. Birth and death records prior to 1873 and marriage records prior to 1945 have been lost.
