Parish History[edit | edit source]

Hinderwell; St Hilda with Roxby chapelry is an Ancient Parish in the county of Yorkshire. Other places in the parish include: Hinderwell St Nicholas, Staithes, Runswick, and Roxby. 

HINDERWELL (St. Hilda), a parish, in the union of Whitby, E. division of the liberty of Langbaurgh,N. riding of York, 10 miles (N. W. by W.) from Whitby;including the chapelry of Roxby, and containing 1970inhabitants, of whom 1771 are in the township of Hinderwell. There are places of worship in the village of Staithes for Calvinists, Wesleyan Methodists, and Ranters.[1]
