Portugese Colonization (late 15th century-1974)[edit | edit source]
Portuguese Guinea was a West African colony of Portugal from the late 15th century until 10 September 1974, when it gained independence as Guinea-Bissau.[1]
There are no colonial records available online, or on microfilm for Guinea-Bissau. However, the Arquivo Historico Ultramarino (Overseas Historical Archive) in Portugal is responsible for preserving and keeping all documents related to the Empire of Portugal's overseas territories. Since Guinea-Bissau was once colonized by the Portuguese, records from its colonial period may be in these archives. Visit the archive's website here to see what is available.
