Gudumlund estate was established in 1354 by Johannes Ryning. It has been owned by members of the Slet, Kaas, Brahe, von Buchwald, and von Schimmelmann families. In 1798 Ernst Heinrich von Schimmelmann, the Danish government's Minister of Finance, became owner of the estate. He also owned several plantations in St. Croix.
