Brief History

The town of Greensboro was granted on August 20, 1781 by the Vermont Legislature.  The charter was issued under the name of Coltkiln (sometimes rendered incorrectly as Colt Hill). However, the new town that had been granted as Coltkiln was suddenly and without any explanation chartered as Greensboro.

The harvesting and sale of ice became big business from the late 1800s until the late 1930s since farmers needed large amounts for keeping milk and butter cool during warm summer days and for shipping on the railroad. At one point three commercial ice houses in Greensboro harvested 180,000 tons of ice in 2-3 weeks from mid-January to mid-February.

The town includes the places of Campbells Corners, East Greensboro, Gebbie Corner, Greensboro Four Corners, Greensboro Bend, The Four Corners, Tolmans Corner, and Burlington Point. The population at the 2010 US Census was 762. [1]  [2]  [3]
