Information about the free personal research consultation service offered in the Family History Library.

Consultation Service[edit | edit source]

The Family History Library offers free personal research consultations at the Research Desks.

These services are offered as time is available from the research specialists, so every subject is not available at all times. Guests can visit the Reference desk to request the assistance for a Specialist. A Specialist can then be paged to assist the guests with their research inquiries.

Consultation is available to address the following needs.

Handwriting and Translation assistance:[edit | edit source]

  • Genealogically and historically important information
  • This service does not include word for word transcriptions

Preparing for a Consultation[edit | edit source]

For a consultation to be productive, bring the following, if possible:

Consultation for research problems:[edit | edit source]

  • Pedigree charts and family group sheets
  • Paper copies of all family documents, letters, photos, etc.
  • Other pertinent documents, if available
  • Research logs showing what research has been done, what records have been searched and the results of each

Consultation for organization and technogy problems:[edit | edit source]

  • Pedigree charts and family group sheets
  • Paper copies of all family documents, letters, photos, etc.
  • Other pertinent documents, if available

Handwriting and Translation assistance:[edit | edit source]

  • Photocopies of each document to be read
  • The roll of microfilm from which the documents were copied, if applicable
  • Writing pad to make notes or laptop
