Wiki Templates

Templates are standard wiki pages whose content is designed to be transcluded (embedded) inside other pages. Templates follow a convention that the name is prefixed with "Template:", assigning it to that namespace. Therefore you can create them like any other wiki page.

Background

Categorization

England, Scotland and Ireland Parish Categorization Project

  • Goal on this project is to update the Categorization on the Parish pages in England, Scotland and Ireland.
  • Steps to follow are at Parish_Categorization

Wiki Template Categorization

One of our jobs is to see that everything is Categorized. Template can be a challenge in this area. Because of the nature of the template special instruction are necessary to keep it from going where you don't want it. Controlling template inclusion

Categorization of Sidebar Un-categorized Templates

  • Go to Special:UncategorizedTemplates and select only Templates that end with -sidebar
  • Put the page into edit and then Wikitext
  • Check for a closing div tab. If not there place it just after the main template.
  • Now place the following at the bottom of the page
<noinclude>
[[Category:Sidebar templates]]
</noinclude>

  • Add to summary added category. Save and check to see if it worked.

Categorization of Place Uncategorized Templates

  • Go to Special:UncategorizedTemplates and select only Templates that has a place name in them. United States place codes are in the USPS code. Example: MO is for Missouri Example:Template:MO Vital Records
  • Put the page into edit and then Wikitext
  • Go to the bottom of the page and place the following at the bottom of the page. Just add the correct Postal Code for the different states.
<noinclude>
[[Category:Templates for MO pages]]
</noinclude>

  • Add to summary added category. Save and check to see if it worked.

Wiki Template Clean Up

When templates are placed in any article they come with a Category and if the Category is not given a noinclude order it will show on every page it is placed on. We have many of these in the Wiki. The goal is to get these under control by placing the order before and after each template that has not been secured in this way.

Special:UncategorizedTemplates

We will not be able to redo all but work on them if you can find a category for them. Work on pages about locations. Example: Category:Templates for MT pages

  • Ways to find where these Templates should be categorized.
  • Title
  • Where the page is linked
  • Wikipedia
  • Who created the page
  • Once you have decided what category to place on the template then add.
<noinclude>
[[Category:(Name)]]
</noinclude>

A Great Resource

Lee Drew is a former Team Lead for the Wiki Support Group. He created a GREAT sandbox in which he placed many of the items we use in the wiki and how to use them. You may not need these now but in the future you will be very glad to have it. Please do not edit this page.
