FamilySearch This article describes the services and resources available at a Family History Center, a branch facility of the Family History Library.

Our Family HIstory Center is located in central Virginia in the historic town of Charlottesville, home of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello.This center has been very popular with local family history researchers since it opened in the 1970's  Both members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and patrons from the area community are welcome and can use the facility free of charge.  We hope that everyone will visit and see what we have to offer.

  • 1275 Timberwood Blvd Charlottesville VA 22901 United States
  • We are located just off Airport Road between Route 29 and the Airport.
  • The entrance to our library is at the north end of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Since our door is usually locked, please ring the doorbell and we will answer. 
  • If you need handicap access, please call when you arrive and we will open the main door on the east side of the building.  There are many handicap parking spaces there and there is ADA compatible access.

Open Hours:

  • Tuesdays: 9:00am-12:00pm 
  • Saturday: 9:00am-12:00pm
  • There has been little interest in Sunday afternoon (4:30 - 7:00) openings. Please email me if you would like to see this time reinstated.
  • Evening hours are reserved for church activities

Special Meetings:

  • The Central Virginia Genealogical Society meets here on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 1:30 p.m.

Inclement Weather: When there is inclement weather, we operate on the Albemarle County Schools schedule.  If the Albemarle schools are closed or delayed, we do not open.  If the inclement weather is on a Saturday, check with the center or the temple and family history consultant - center to see if the center is open.

Holiday Schedule:

  • April 15, 2017 for Easter
  • July 4, 2017 for Independence Day
  • August 2016 for summer vacation. We will open again on September 5th (Tuesday).
  • November 21st and 25th, 2017 for Thanksgiving
  • December 20, 2017 - January 1, 2018 for Christmas/New Years

  • Our permanent collection includes: donated books, magazines, and reference materials; hundreds of microfilms and microfiche, especially about Virginia and Germany and various other topics or locations.
  • FHC Portal This center has access to the Family History Center Portal page which gives free access in the center to premium family history software and websites that generally charge for subscriptions.  These websites include:

  • To help you do your research, we have 5 computers, 1 printers, 5 microfilm readers, and 2 microfiche readers in 2 reading rooms. PLEASE NOTE that we follow all copyright laws.
