Family history sources are primarily in Armenian, the sole member of a distinct Indo-European language group. The alphabet was created by Mesrob Mashdotz in 406 in order to translate the Bible. It is composed of 38 letters. Civil records for the period in which Armenia belonged to the Russian Empire are in Russian.
