The Argyll Papers: The Family and Estate Archive of the Duke of Argyll at Inveraray Castle

The Argyll Papers at Inveraray Castle is the family and estate archive of the Duke of Argyll. Dating from the 13th century, the archive records 700 years of the family’s participation in Scottish, British and international events, their private lives and interests and the management of their extensive estates. These estates covered most of Argyllshire, including the islands of Tiree, Iona and Mull, as well as the Lordship of Campbell in Clackmannanshire, Stirling and Fife, and the record of their management, dating from the late 18th century, are particularly useful for family history research. The presentation will then discuss the most useful sources for genealogy in the collection, including:  military papers, 16th to the 20th centuries and include militia lists, muster rolls, accounts and correspondence relating to military and political matters, including 16th and 17th century West Highland unrest and the Jacobite Rebellions.  family diaries and papers particularly for the 8th Duke and Duchess, which include references to the people living and working on the Argyll estates.  pedigrees for the main or cadet branches of the Campbells, and  the estate records. Maps, books, manuscripts, estate papers including rent books and information about workers/crofters on the Duke's properties are especially important.
