James Taylor Adams collected material on various Adams/Addams/Addoms/ Adamson and connected families throughout the United States. Most of the material was collected between 1921 and 1954. Many of the families were from Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Tennessee. He also collected material for a history of the first settlers of Wise County, Virginia, so some of the families have ties to Wise County.
Includes the Ball, Breeding, Bolling/Bowling, Day, Horne/Horn, Huff, Kilgore, Mullins, Davis, Short, Sturgill, Webb, Wells, Roman, Triplett, and other connected families.
James Taylor Adams was born on a farm near Whitesburg, Letcher County, Kentucky, in 1892, the son of Rev. Joseph Adams (1855-1900) and Mary Jane Short Adams (1854-1929). He was the grandson of Rev. Spencer Adams (1823-1905) and William Alfred Short (1825-1893). He married Dicy Roberts (b. 1892) of Big Laurel, Virginia, in 1908. She was the daughter of Shadrick Roberts (d. 1897) and Letty Adams Roberts. They had five children, 1910-1925, born in Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri, and Virginia. He was a newspaperman, worked as a salesman and manager for nursery and insurance companies, and was postmaster of Big Laurel, Virginia.
