If someone was apprenticed to a relative or by the parish (because they were poor), no tax was due, therefore they will not be found in these records.

Apprentices (Class IR.1, v. 1-40).

Index to masters, 1710-1762 (film numbers 477636 and 477637) are transcribed indexes created from the index to apprentices, 1710-1762. They are in alphabetical sequence by surname with each entry providing a page number from the index to apprentices. The index to apprentices are in alphabetical sequence by the apprentices' surname and also by year of indenture. These are also transcribed and have a volume and page (folio) number to the original town registers entry.

Index of Masters for volumes 22-31, 36, 38 (film #824684) are indexed using the previous volume numbers. The entries are arranged by a loose alphabetical format with all surnames starting with "A" together, and so forth. For example: If the surnames, Anderson, Allcock, and Atkins occurred on the first page, they were entered in the index in the order they appeared with the number "1" written in the right column. This.

pattern would continue through all the pages for each register, then start over with page 1 of the particular register for the "B"s. In order to find which surname, look first for the register number and line it up with the current volume number, which will give the time period covered, then search by the first letter of the alphabet of the surname. Up to three registers will be indexed together by surname letter.
