The town of Brooksville was among the first to be settled in North Alabama. Brooksville was named for Henry brooks, son of Jacob Warren Brooks who came to Blount County from Abbeville, South Carolina about 1818. Jacob Warren Brooks' daughter, Nancy Sophronia, married William Alldredge, son of Andrew and Leah Chaney Alldredge. Andrew Alldredge came to Blount County in 1816 and settled at the big spring near Brooksville. This was not an incorporated town until 1875.

The first business house at Brooksville was owned by George Johnson. The Post Office was located on Reed's Hill one mile north of the ton during the Civil War. H.C. Reed was the postmaster. After the war, the post office was moved to Brooksville, and for many years, Mrs. Minnie Barnes was the postmistress and lived next door to the post office.

School was taught for a number of years in Salem Church. The first school building was built by Johnson Brooks.

There are six cemeteries in and near Brooksville. One at each church and the Alldredge cemetery, a short distance west of brooksville on the left, on Highway 278; Blue Ridge Cemetery, off Hwy 278 at the top of the ridge; a small cemetery located on the highway about one mile east of Brooksville.
