Enslaved.org: Downloadable Resources for Black Genealogy

This lecture will discuss Enslaved: Peoples of the Historical Slave Trade, and how it puts research materials directly in the hands of family history researchers. Since 2018, Enslaved.org has served the needs of scholars, genealogists, students, and members of the public interested in the people of the historical slave trade. Enslaved.org is a discovery hub that centers the lives of named enslaved and free[d] individuals who are made searchable and discoverable through a large and growing number of datasets and digital projects. Researchers can learn from linking data, visualizing larger relations and movements, and connecting the fragments of information about people’s lives from one dataset to the next.

The presentation will explore our principles and practices of digital access and preservation when the research centers the lives of named enslaved persons and their descendants. It also address the recent addition of FamilySearch’s “Two Million Black Americans Born Before Emancipation in the 1900 U.S. Census."

Researching Enslaved Ancestors

Breaking through the 1870 brick wall to discover more about ancestors prior to the end of slavery can prove challenging. Changing surnames, families ripped apart, and identifying the former enslaver are just a few roadblocks when researching enslaved families. This session will dive deep into creating a research strategy and organizing the records uncovered. Genealogist Meaghan E. H. Siekman will also provide tips for making sense of all the information unearthed in the search and constructing a proof argument when records are limited. Best suited for those with intermediate-advanced genealogical skills.
