Carsten Heinrich Juergen Wilhelm Scheele was born March 27, 1825, in Krelingen, Hannover, Germany. He died November 18, 1914 in Washington County, Kansas. He married Sophia Lehgrand May 1857 in Cook County, Illinois, USA. She was born March 4, 1838 in Wenden Province of Hannover, Germany, and died January 14, 1916 in Washington County, Kansas. Germany had a mandatory military draft age at age 18. Wilhelm told people his real name was Carsten Wilhelm, but he turned the two names around so he wouldn´t get caught by the draft. In Germany, people usually didn´t marry until age 30. It is not known where or when Wilhelm and Sophia got married, but their son Heinrich was born in Cook County Illinois. Louise was born near Walnut Grove, Illinois---close to Chicago. Awina was born at Matteson, Illinois, also the Chicago area. The family moved to Washington County Kansas in 1868 and settled 1-1/2 miles east of Horseshoe Church. It was said that their first winter here they lived off of rabbits and cornbread. For lighting, Sophia wrapped a rag in lard, placed it in a container and lit the rag. At first Wilhelm had to go all the way to Frankfurt for flour, etc. They had no calendar, so Sundays were marked with some type of mark above the door. Sophia was an intelligent woman-she knew and kept track of all the different Sundays of the Church year.
