Martha Marie Herzog Hammett, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend died on Saturday, May 9, 2009, after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 80 years young. She died at home surrounded by her loving husband, children and sister. The family will receive visitors at Phillips and Lucky Funeral Home in Rockdale on Monday, May 11, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. The burial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, at Peace Lutheran Church, 303 Meadow Drive in Rockdale. Martha was born on August 9, 1928, in Kurten, Texas, she was the third of six children born to Effie and Henry Herzog. Martha met Leon, the love of her life in Bryan, the two were married six weeks later on October 6, 1951. Martha and Leon moved to Rockdale in 1953, so Leon could work for Alcoa. Together they raised two children, Regena and Arlyn. Regena shares her mother's birthday. Martha and Leon joined Peace Lutheran Church in 1955, and Martha worked tirelessly in the Alter Guild and sang in the choir in later years. She was a wonderful seamstress and used her talents both for the church making religious banners and in her home sewing for family and friends. Her greatest joy in life was traveling and fishing with Leon and watching her grandsons' soccer, baseball and football games. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Charles and Eugene Herzog and a sister, Edelwiese Schultz Weatherly. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Leon; daughter, Regena Baker and husband, Nathan, of Cedar Creek, Texas; son, Arlyn Hammett, of Rockdale; sister, Doris Miller, and Carolyn Teeter, both of Bryan; grandsons, Cale and Nic Hammett, of Rockdale, Trey Baker and wife, Holly, of Austin, Ryan Baker, of Dallas; granddaughter, Kathleen Romine Lowdermilk, of Bossier City, La., who she loved as a daughter; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews that loved her dearly. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Trey, Ryan, Cale and Nic; nephews, Chas Teeter and Russell Leonard. Honorary pallbearers will be her nephews, Gus Schultz Jr., Marvin, Chip and Kenny Morgan, Pat Walker, Johnny and Michael Leonard, and Roy and Ken Hammett. The family wishes to especially thank Pastor Jan Campbell for her love and spiritual support and express gratitude for the loving care Martha received from her Vista Care Hospice team Denise Pfeil, Dana Goodwin and Steve Theriault.
