ANCESTRY OF STEPHEN RALPH BOSWELL, 871 WESTCHESTER PLACE, LOS ANGELES, CA 90005-3502, TELEPHONE: (213) 908-9606, E-MAIL: ralphboswell@hotmail.com 1. Stephen Ralph Boswell and Lois Worthington 2. Stephen Roy Boswell and Zina Armina Huff 3. Stephen Boswell and Ann Priscilla Garrett 4. Abraham Boswell and Matilda Betts 5. Abraham Shotwell Buswell and Sarah Crowell 6. Caleb Buswell, Jr. and Mercy Boardman 7. Caleb Buswell and Mary Badger 8. John Buswell and Tabitha Walker 9. Isaac Buswell and Anna Ordway. 10. Samuel Buswell and Sarah Keyes. Samuel was born in Husbands Bosworth Parish, Leicestershire, England, in 1628, and came to America in 1638 with his father and his brother and sister, William Buswell and Phoebe Buswell. It is not clear if their step-mother, Margaret, came with them from England, or if their father, Isaac, married 2nd wife Margaret in America 11. Isaac Buswell and Elizabeth _________ (1st wife) from Husbands Bosworth Parish, Leicestershire, England. Elizabeth died in April 1631, after giving birth to Gabriel Buswell. Gabriel died in May 1631. The burial records for both mother and son are in the vital records of Husbands Bosworth Parish. Isaac Buswell was probably born in Clipston, Northamptonshire. Isaac came to America in 1638, and settled in Salisbury, Massachusetts. 12. Roger Buswell and Margaret _________ 13. John Buswell and his 1st wife (name unknown to me, but Not Elizabeth Hall) from Clipston Northamtonshire, and Dishley Grange, Leicestershire. His 2nd wife was Marie Botham from Derbyshire. It is possible that the 1st wife was surnamed Allestre, because John Buswell gave a great deal of property to William Allestre, of Derbyshire, and John Botham, a Draper from Derbyshire, the father of Marie Botham, 18 years before his death, but after the death of his first wife. Could he be returning property to William Allestre that he received from his first wife's father as a dowry; and giving some property to John Botham as he married his daughter, Marie? OR were they business partners in the sheep and wool trade? The next couple are probably John Buswell's parents, but I have been unable to prove it yet. 14. Sir Robert or Sir Martin de Bosville, Treasurer of the Army of William The Conqueror, and Treasurer of England under King Rufus, William's son. Came from the Village of Bosville in Normandy, France, in 1066. There are two extensive histories of the Boswell family of which I am aware. There are minor differences between the two books on the early generations. 1. The Boswell Family, by Jasper John Boswell, published in Leeds, England, in 1906. I would like to purchase a copy of this book. I have a copy printed from a microfilm, but it is fuzzy. I would like to enlarge and reprint this book if I could ever get a digitized copy. I know only one person who owns a copy, and he won't let it out of his sight. All of the other copies of which I am aware are in libraries. 2. Fortunes of a Family, by Lady Alice MacDonald of the Isles, published in 1928. I have a copy of this book. There is a great deal of information on the Bosvilles of Yorkshire in two books by Reverend Joseph Hunter. Joseph Hunter (6 February 1783 – 9 May 1861) was a Unitarian Minister, antiquarian, and deputy keeper of public records now best known for the two publications identified below. These publications are still considered among the best works written on the history of Sheffield and South Yorkshire. 1. History and Topography of the Deanery of Doncaster in the Diocese and County of York. ALSO KNOWN AS, South Yorkshire, in two volumes 2. Hallamshire, The History and Topography of the Parish of Sheffield in the County of York There are major genealogical collections on the Boswell family in the following locations: The Brynmor Jones Library at the University of Hull, in Yorkshire. These items were donated to the library by Sir Ian Bosville-MacDonald, the head of the MacDonald Clan in Scotland. The most valuable part of this collection is a 10 ft. X 2 ft. genealogical chart, beautifully made in in 1586, by Richard Glover, The King's Cartographer.
