The family groups represented in this collection may not be complete, because information was entered bit by bit as I found it or happened upon it; I have not done any systematic research on these families. Because they do not compose whole family genealogies, these listings are arranged differently from most genealogical records or histories. Each listing is a family group, and is arranged and filed alphabetically under the name of the head of the family. Names are generally in alphabetical order (disregarding spelling variations and middle names), then in approx. chronological order. The first sorting is by surname (mixing together any and all spelling variations), then by given name, then by approximate birthdate (when known) in approximate chronological order. For easier reference, surnames in headings are grouped together under the most common spelling usage that evolved in this geographical location, regardless of individualistic spellings in the records themselves. Cross references are used in most cases where surname spellings substantially vary. Within the quoted records, the individual spellings have been (mostly) retained because they sometimes provide clues (although in general—but with exceptions—they seem to largely reflect the record keeper's particular orthography and not always, at this early period, any special family preference). Those interested can see the variety and evolvement of a particular name’s spelling and the interesting and sometimes amusing attempts at phonetic reproduction. Keep in mind that before names and spellings were standardized, records reflected the individualistic whim of the particular recorder (often two different spellings of the same name within the same document). In addition, all records were handwritten, and sometimes deciphering a handwritten name in early records can be quite challenging! So expect to search under all possibilities of spelling (for both surnames and given names). Given names are grouped together without regard for middle initials or middle names. Because middle names and/or initials are sometimes used, sometimes not used in various records, it seemed simplest to arrange entries as if the middle names or initials did not exist. Usually all variations of a given name are grouped together as though spelled one way: Jan, Johannes, John, etc. are all grouped as one (but also look under the other forms). Sources and references are included with each "family" grouping, but may or may not include sources that are cited (or are obvious, such as baptismal records, etc.) within the narrative or listing itself. As with any compiled genealogical record, researchers should regard this information as leads and clues, and should verify all data with independent research. AroundApril 14, 1685, Jan Cornelissen successfully petitioned the government of NewYork for rightful ownership of the Crab Meadow area. The text of that petition reads, in part, " The humble petition of Cornelissen Showeth: That your petitioner is a native of this Province, his father a Christian, his mother an Indian of Long Island. "That he hath married a Christian in this Province, and by her hath nine children now living. "And whereas the Indians, his kindred, are willing to divide, set out and allot that share of land, which according to their wisdom is his right, and inheritance at a certain place called Tersarge, being to the eastward of the town of Huntington, on the north side of Long Island, which for the better support of himself and his family he is intended to cultivate and improve. He therefore humbly prays that your Honorable will be pleased to order him a warrant for the same, upon which he may obtain a patent or grant and confirmation from your Honorable, under his Majesty, for the same."2 But by October of that year, he transferred the deed to Judge John Palmer, a particularly influential associate to Governor Dongan whose name appears in a number of land deals and controversial transactions during the era. The names of two other NativeAmericans, Opsam andVenox, appear on the deed to Palmer on October 10.2 [There is no evidence to show that Jan CorneliszenVan Texel transferred the deed; apparently Judge Palmer simply added a couple of NativeAmericans to the deed who then signed the deed and received a trivial sum to to turn over ownership to Judge Palmer. That is why theVan Tassel family petitioned the State of NewYork in subsequent years (after Palmer had been arrested and deported from the country for land schemes perpetrated against whites in New England)--RickVan Tassel ] On December 23, 1685, the Crab Meadow Patent conferred by Governor Dongan to Judge Palmer and two other men – John Royse of NYC and John Cornhill of Flushing (ancestor of the founders of Cornell University). The area described was as follows: “being on Long Island to the Eastward of Huntington Comonly Called or Knowne by the name of Crab Meadow and by the Indians Called Katawomeck bounded on theWest by a Certaine Cove Leading to Huntington Mill and from the Head of the said Cove Running South to the Highway which Leadeth to Southampton and soe and from thence northward all along the said hollow along the Highways side to a Place CalledWhittmores Hollow as the Hollow runneth to a Place Called the Fresh Pond and from thenceWestward as the Sound runneth to theWestermost Point of Land which maketh the Cove Early Bergen County Families, compiled by PatWardell, 130 Crestview Drive, Englewood, FL 34223 • the.wardells@gte.net 10 aforesaid and so up the said Cove to the Head.” Palmer's claims on the land were swept away during the turmoil over governmental control of the NewYork area in England over the next 30 years – he was arrested withAndros and others, a number of land transactions were picked apart by subsequent authority, and in the next several decades, the residents of Huntington asserted their rights to the land despite attempts by members of theVan Taxel family to reclaim the land in 1705 and 1712.2 One such petition stated the family's claim thus: "whereas your petitioner's father as heir to his mother, Catoneras, a native Indian of the Island Nassamo, who in her lifetime was seized of a certain tract or parcel of land, lying and being in the Island aforesaid, now in the county of Suffolk, next the town of Huntington, called by the natives,Anendesack, in English, Eader's Neck beach, and so along the Sound four miles or thereabouts until the Fresh Pond, called by the natives,Assawanama, where a creek runs into the Sound, and from the Sound running in to the woods six miles or thereabouts. And your Petitioners, being all Christians, and professing the Holy Protestant religion, and knowing that the Heathen never were disturbed in the possession of their lands of inheritance in the Government, your petitioner, as Christians, also would very willingly hold the same by his Majesty's Letters Patent under the seal of this Province.Your Petitioners therefore pray etc. CorneliusVan Texel Jacob the mark ofVan Texel JanVan Texel Hendrick the mark of Lent Barent DeWitt Peter P.S. the mark of Storm."2 In one account, the ongoing legal contention over ownership of the area is described as follows: This petition was referred to the Council, which after due consideration, reported in its favor and recommended the granting of a warrant of survey.A deed and survey of the lands in question was grantedApril 22, 1714. By this time people from New England had settled the property that the family sought. An action was brought to oust the intruders, who although they might have purchased the lands from the Indians, had no legal title as their purchases had not been approved by the Governor, and Council of the Province of NewYork.1 This suit dragged along in the Courts until the Revolution, when with the change of Government it died. The last references to it are found in the will of John van Tassel dated December 23, 1771, recorded in the office of the Surrogate of New York County, who directs how "Crop Meadow" then in litigation shall be divided if recovered;" and the will of HendrickVan Tassel mentions "an estate depending upon Long Island of some land now in dispute of the law" and directs how it shall be divided if recovered.2 This family moved from NewAmsterdam to settle in the Indian town ofAppamacpo, inWestchester Co., NY (which became a part of Cortland Manor). His farm comprised nearly the whole of the village of Sing Sing.1 He was appointed tax collector ofAppamacpo by 1694. In 1705, his sons, “Cornelis van Texell, Jacob van Texell, JanVan Texell &Willem van Texell Sonns of Jan Cornelisse van Texell late Deceased and Hendrick Lent husband of Catharin one of the Daughters of the said John, Barent DeWit husband of Sarah another of the Daughters of the said John, and Pieter Storm husband of Margaret allso a Daughter of the said John” petitioned Gov. Cornbury & his council for a patent for land, and stated that “whereas yor Petrs father as heir to his mother, Catonoras a native Indian of the Island of Nassauw who in her life time was Seized of a certain Tract or parcell of land lying and being on the Island aforesaid now in the County of Suffolk neer the Town of Huntington called by the natives Anendeiack in English Eader necks beach and along the Sound four miles or thereabouts running till the fresh Pond called by the nativesAssawananma where a Creeck runns into the Sound and from the Sound running into the woods Six miles or thereabouts....” They signed CornelisVan Texel, Jacob van Texell (mark), JanVan Texel,Willem van Texel, Hendrick Lent (mark), Barent deWit, Pieter Storm (mark).Apparently no action was taken under this first petition, so in 1713 a 2nd petition was presented, on which an order was granted, referring the matter to a Committee or Official Board, to consider and report whether a survey ofg the lands should be made, and in due time a report was diled in favor of such a survey.
