(1) Immigrant Thomas Sherwood (1586-1655) and wives Alice Tiler and Mary [CONTRIBUTED TO ANCESTRY.COM BY "jlchipman"] Thomas Sherwood (1586-1655) was born and raised in England. He married first Alice Tiler [not Alice Seabrook and not Alice Milles] in about 1610 in England and they had 8 children born in England. The children's birthdates on the FGS are actually their baptismal dates at Kettle Boston, Suffolk, England. Thomas Sherwood (1586-1655) at age 48 sailed in April of 1634 from Ipswich, England aboard the "Francis" with wife Alice age 47 and children Ann age 14 and Rose age 11 and Thomas age 10 and Rebecca age 9 (according to the records) and they landed at Boston Harbor in June of 1634. Nothing is know about the 4 children that did not come with the family from England to New England except that they were remembered in their father's will. Thomas Sherwood (1586-1655) and his family had settled at Wethersfield, CT by 1635 and they were among its first settlers. Thomas Sherwood was a carpenter. He received an 8 acre homelot and had a house, barn, etc. there, too. Thomas Sherwood (1586-1655) sold the Wethersfield, CT property in 1640 to George Wyllys and the Sherwoods moved to Rippowams (soon Stamford) in CT. [Paul W. Prindle points out that Thomas was still bringing court actions in Hartford in 1645, but believes he probably had moved to Stamford by 1647.] In about 1640 Thomas Sherwood's (1586-1655) first wife Alice died and he married second in about 1640 to Mary and they had 6 more children. All of these events probably happened in CT. Thomas Sherwood (1586-1655) was one of the original settlers in Fairfield, CT in about 1648. He sold his Stamford, CT property in 1650 to John Holly. Thomas Sherwood (1586-1655) bought land at Barlow's Plain in about 1650 and erected Fairfield's first grist mill there on the Sasqua River (now Mill River). Thomas Sherwood (1586-1655) was Fairfield's Deputy to the General Court in Hartford in 1653 and 1654. His will was written on 21 July 1655 and it was proved on 26 October 1655. It mentions his children by name. Widow Mary Sherwood married second John Banks in 1658 and they lived at Rye, CT near her son Isaak Sherwood. Widow Mary Banks will was written on 06 January 1694 and it was proved on 13 March 1694 and it mentions her Sherwood children by name. **There was a Thomas Sherwood at Stratford, CT at about this same time who married ALice Seabrook and there is no known relationship between he and our Thomas Sherwood (1586-1655) of Wethersfield, Stamford, and Fairfield, CT. These two Thomas Sherwoods are often confused with one another. Daughter [of Thomas Sherwood's first marriage] Rose Sherwood (born 1620 England) married first in about 1641 at Stratford, CT to Thomas Rumble and they had 1 child there. He died in about 1649. She married second,in about 1650 at Fairfield, CT to Thomas Barlow (1620-1658) and they had 3 children there. He died in about 1658. She married third in about 1658 at Fairfield, CT to Edward Nash and they are not believed to have had any children. Daughter [of Thomas Sherwood's second marriage] Mary Sherwood (born 1642 Connecticut) married in 1659 at Windsor, CT to Joseph Loomis (1615-1687) and they had 8 children there. [She may have been married first to a Mr. Chauncey???] Sources: Genealogical Dictionary by Savage, 1860; historical records (ship passenger list, wills); Daniel L. Jacobus, 1930 (2) "The English Home of Thomas Sherwood of Wethersfield, Stamford, and Fairfield, CT," by Leslie Mahler in The American Genealogist, Vol. 80, pp. 279 - 282 (2005) [CONTRIBUTED TO ANCESTRY.COM BY "JB_FamilyAtoZ"] Thomas Sherwood, his wife and some of their children, were one of the many family groups listed on "last of Aprill 1634" on the ship Frances, which departed from Ipswich, Suffolk, for New England. The passenger list gives the family as follows: Thomas Sherwood, aged 48, wife Alice 47, children Anna 14, Rose 11, Thomas 10, Rebecca 9. Thomas left a will proved in 1655, which also names elder daughters Jane, Tamsen, Mary (or Margaret), and Sarah, who probably came to New England separately. Since the family departed from Ipswich, it would seem that they had originated in either Suffolk or Essex. "Boyd's Marriage Index," which covers a very large percentage of the marriages in those two counties, shows no marriage for a Thomas and Alice Sherwood in the appropriate time period. That failing, a search was made in the Bishops' Transcripts from 1620-1629 for the Archdeaconry of Sudbury, which makes up the western half of Suffolk. Only one entry seemed appropriate: the 1620 baptism of Rose, daughter of Thomas and Alice Sherwood, at Kettle Baston. Examination of a transcript of the Kettle Baston register has confirmed that this was the English home of Thomas Sherwood of Fairfield, Connecticut, as the baptisms for his daughters Mary, Thomasine, Sarah, Anna, Rose, and Rebecca are all recorded there. A search in Sherwood wills inthe various probate courts in Suffolk from 1610 to 1650 has not revealed any definite references to this family. Perhaps local manorial records will provide further information. Thomas Sherwood was born about 1586 (age 48 in the passenger list of 1634) and was living at Kettle Baston, Suffolk, from 1613 to 1622. He died in Fairfield, Connecticut between 21 Jul 1655 (date of will) and 7 Sep 1655 (date of inventory). He arrived with some members of his family of the ship Frances in Boston, MA, in 1634, and moved to Wethersfield, CT, in the following year. He sold his lands there in 1640 and went to Stamford, CT, moving again in 1648 to Fairfield, CT, where he remained until his death there in 1655. Several daughters are mentioned in his will, most of whose legacies indicate that they were probably married, but he failed to state their married names. He married first, say 1610, ALICE (Unknown), who has not been identified. She was born about 1587, (aged 47 in the passenger list) and was still living in 1634. He married secondly, perhaps around 1637, MARY (Unknown), who is also unidentified; she remarried by 4 Jun 1658 John Banks. She died between 4 Jan 1693/4 (date of will) and 13 Mar 1693/4 (date of inventory). A difficult problem in identifying Thomas Sherwood's children comes from his will, which was dated 21 Jul 1655 and proved the following 25 October. The original document does not survive, and the recorded copy is in bad condition. The will is recorded on two pages and is missing material at the top of both, where it was apparently burned. Donald Lines Jacobus apparently used both the recorded copy and E. Champion Bacon's 1841 abstracts: "[I]n two or three estates in the damaged first volume, [Bacon's] abstracts made so long ago contained a little more information than is now legible." Paul Prindle used a transcription, not otherwise identified, also made when the damage was less significant. Thomas Sherwood "gave unto the children of my first wife. I bequeath to my son Thomas five acres of upland lying upon the north end of Sasqua Neck. I bequeath to my daughter Jane twenty shillings. I bequeath to my daughter Tamsen twenty shillings. I bequeath to my daughter Marg. [sic] twenty shillings. I bequeath to my daughter Sarah twenty shillings. I bequeath to my daughter Hanna twenty shillings. I bequeath to my daughter Rose twenty shillings. I bequeath to my daughter Rebecca forty shillings. I will that the above named legacies be payd within one year after my decease. I will and bequeath to my well beloved wife Mary Sherwood whom I make my executor and executrix of this my last will who shall pay the named legacies." He then left to son Steven Sherwood "my dwelling house and homelot with all the buildings on this homelot and all the lott that layd next to my homelot . . . except half an acre"; to son Matthew "all my upland and meadow lying on the other side of Uncawy Creek namely on the east side", to daughter Mary 10 pounds; to daughter Ruth 10 pounds; to daughter Abigaill 10 pounds; to son Isaak "that dwelling house next to my dwelling house that I now live in," etc; to "my loving and well beloved wife Mary Sherwood all the estate undivided . . . Excepting a mare colt which my son Isaak shal have." Steven was to have his portion when he was 20 and Matthew also at 20. "And my son Isaak shall have four acres of meadow in the great meadow which I bought of Peter Merritt and five acres in the new field which he is to have at twenty years of age. To Mary, Abigaill and Ruth which I had by my last wife . . ." "Well beloved friends Thomas Stapes and Nathan Gold to be overseers of this my last will." On 18 Jan 1658/9, John Banks, husband of the widow Mary (__) Sherwood, signed an agreement to pay Sherwood's daughters, Ruth and Abigail Sherqood, 10 pounds each, as ordered by a court at Stratford, CT, on 4 Jun 1658. Mary Banks' will was dated 6 Jan 1693/4 and probated on 13 Mar 1693/4. She mentioned her son Stephen, Stephen's daughter Ruth Sherwood, Hannah "Lumis" [relationship not stated], daughter Ruth, son Isaac Sherwood, and granddaughter Mary Sherwood (daughter of Matthew); son Matthew Sherwood was named executor and received the residue. We can deduce this by his age given as 48 years in the list of passengers who embarked from Ipswich, Suffolk, England on the Francis the last day of April 1634, arriving at Boston, Massachusetts in June 1634. Traveling with him were his wife Alice, age 47 years and four children, Anna (called Hannah in some later records), age 14, Rose 11, Thomas 10 and Rebecca 9. The family didn't stay long in Boston. Thomas went with the first settlers in 1635 to Wethersfield, Connecticut where he sold land to George Wyllys in March 1640. This was probably about the time that Alice died and he then married Mary. Their son Stephen was born about 1641. In 1648 Thomas sold out to John Holly and settled in Fairfield, Connecticut where he remained until his death. His will dated 21 July 1655 was proved 22 Oct 1655. (Invoice of estate of Thomas Sherwood, Sr. taken 7 Sep 1655 - Probate Records of Fairfield County). He names his son and six daughters by his 'first wife' as Jane, Tamsen, Margaret, Anna (Hannah), Thomas, Rose and Rebecca. His will further says 'to my loving and well beloved wife Mary Sherwood', and names his children Mary, Stephen, Matthew, Abigail, Ruth and Isaac." ↑ Thomas Sherwood sketch, in Great Migration Newsletter.
