CHRONOLOGY of HICKERSONS in VIRGINIA By Wilford W. Whitaker - March 2015 We need to start out by saying that there are several different Hickerson, Higgerson, Higginson, etc. families in Virginia since the earliest times. These are not all related, even when different families converge in one area. It has been one dickens of a time to separate them and the job is not finished. Generally, we can state that DNA shows that the Hanover County Higgersons descend from a Scandinavian source and our Thomas Hickersons/Higgasons in the Fauquier/Halifax area descend from a western European source (England?) Basically there was Higginsons, from England, who settled early near Jamestown; and then a New England family, some of whom went to Virginia, then a group who settled in Maryland especially near Baltimore. Our Thomas Hickerson may descend from one of these families. The word “CROATOAN” is found carved into a tree without any crosses or signs of distress. The fate of the “Lost Colony” still remains a mystery. He was the first man to build in the neighborhood of Williamsburg, and on June 6, 1632, obtained a patent for land at the head of Archer's Hope Creek, which he called Harrop, north of Tuttey's Neck. This land fell afterwards to Col.
