Started on my journey from Auburn Township in the morning of April 25, 1864, traveled on boat and wagon to McGregor. Left McGregor 27th afternoon on the Sucker State (Boat). 28th on the river yet and fair weather. Arrived at Davenport about dark. 29th finds us still floating down the Mississippi about 7 O'clock the arm broke of the fly wheel and here we are to stay, I know not how long. Got underway about __o'clock in the evening, rained some in the evening, 30th yet on the river. The first place we landed at in the morning was Fort Madison, Iowa. We are now 9 o'clock at Mont Rose, Iowa. Half past 6 we are lying at the Kearch Wharf and will not probably start from here before dark. May 1st. We arrived at this place (Hannibal, MO) this morning at daylight and cannot go any farther until Monday morning. I attended meeting this forenoon at the Congregational Church and heard a good sermon. May 2nd. On the Cars here Hannibal to ___, got to St. Joseph at daylight Tuesday morning. May 3rd. Went aboard the (Colored Anien__) boat. This is sure a trip. Wed. 4th. Moving all night. Traveled 25 miles. Sunday 15. Traveled 12 miles. Crossed Soup Fork in the afternoon. Monday 16th. Traveled about 12 miles. Tuesday 17th. Traveled about 20 miles. Wednesday 18th. Traveled about 20 miles. Thursday 19th. Traveled about 20 miles, crossed one large stream. Friday May 20th./64 Traveled about 14 miles Saturday 21. Traveled about 15 miles and stopped for the night opposite of Fort Carney. Sunday 22. Laid over Monday 23. Traveled in the afternoon 15 miles, camped on a small creek. Tuesday 24. Traveled 30 miles camped on the bank of the Plat (Platte) River. Wednesday 25. Traveled 24 miles and camped on the Platte River. Thursday 26. Traveled about 20 miles, passed in the afternoon the grave of a man that was buried a day or two before who had been shot by an Indian with an arrow. We camped on the bank of the river, and I left the train that I came in and joined another train that evening. Friday 27. Traveled about 20 miles, passed the South Fork of the Platte and crossed the Bluffs Fork and camped on the North Fork of the Platte. Saturday 28 Went ahead hunting. Left the road between three and four miles above Bluff Fork. Went in northerly direction up and down among the bluffs about six miles. Came in sight of Bluff Fork. Saw two rabbits, shot one. Saw two antelopes and in the evening saw a set gents and ladies dance and a circle of men, ladies and children of about 100. Sunday 29 Traveled about 20 miles and camped at the foot of the Bluffs by a clear spring of cold water and had plenty of Indians to visit us of the Sioux Tribe, as this is their country. Monday 30. There is one of the Indians by me as I write this and the sun is up but a few minutes. Traveled about 25 miles. We passed two Indian Camps, fourteen tepees in one and upwards of forty in the other, passed several small streams, the last one was Wolf Creek twenty feet wide at the foot of sand bluff east side. Camped about a mile west of the bluff. Tuesday 31. Traveled about 25 miles, watched creek. Castle Creek six rods wide, swift current. Camped half mile from the Platte. Rainy night. Wednesday June 1 1864. Traveled 24 miles, passed Crab Creek and over some bluffs and camped on the bank of the river opposite of Ancient Bluffs. These bluffs resemble ancient castles. I went on top of them for wood. They are some of the curiosities of nature. Rainy night. Thursday 2. Rained in the morning, traveled in the afternoon about 12 miles and camped two miles below Castle Rock. The rock is on the south side of the river. Friday 3. Traveled about 25 miles and camped on the river a few miles above Chimney Rock. Saturday 4. Traveled about 25 miles and passed Scotts Bluffs. Sunday 5th. Traveled about 14 miles. Monday 6th. Traveled about 25 miles and camped opposite Fort Laramie. Tuesday 7. Went over to Laramie and stayed nearly all day and traveled about six miles and camped on the river. Wednesday 8. Traveled about 15 miles and we camped on the river. A man trying to swim the river here today was drowned and was not taken out, he could not be found, the river runs swift. Thursday June 9. Started early in the morning. There was no grass to feed. Traveled 9 miles. Camped at Alder Clump. Good water grass back on the hills or bluffs. Friday June 10. From 100 to 150 wagons here the morning. Traveled 20 miles over a bluffy road and but little water. Camped near the river. Saturday 11. Traveled over road lay over a bluff and then down to the river then over the bluffs to the river again. 12 up along the river 5 then over the bluffs steep places 8 camped on the river. Sunday June 12/64. Went up the river, some sandy about 5 miles and layed over down the river on a low bottom. Monday 13. Road near the river good for a few miles, then sandy and some uneven . Came down to the river, then over rising ground and down to the river 7 up along the river a short distance and over a high bluff and down to the river again, up the river, very sandy 6 miles and camped on the river bottoms. Tuesday 14. Traveled up near the river over the bluffs several times and camped on the river bank distance 18 or 20, sandy old bridge. Wednesday June 15/64. Traveled up along the Platte River, road runs over high bluffs passed a bridge that spans the river and the telegraph crossed at the same place and camped on a small stream where the road leaves the Platte. Distance traveled 18 or 20. Thursday 16. Traveled 18 miles. Road some hilly, one or two small streams east of the road 5 miles from Prospect Hill. Friday June 17. Traveled 18 miles. Passed Greese Wood Creek, clear water. Passed Alkali Lakes, crossed Sweet Water River and camped on the bank of it about 1 mile above Independence Rock. Saturday 18. Traveled 23 miles. Passed Devil's Gate and small stream of clear water, passed over some bluffs, sandy in places, camped by the river where a small creek came into the river. Sunday 19. Bitter Cottonwood Creek 3 miles. First ford of river 6 miles, ford 2 times in 2 miles, over bluffs to river 8 miles, Alkali Pond 6 camp 2 miles farther out no water. Monday June 20. Traveled about 8 miles and camped on the river. Tuesday 21. Crossed the river directly after starting leave the river 10 miles from the ford and go over and thru the bluffs pass, some sloughs and a spring and come to Strawberry Creek 10 miles branch of Sweetwater 4 miles. We camped at a spring over against the bluff north of the road about half a mile from the creek. Wednesday June 22. Crossed a branch of Sweetwater half or three fourths of a mile from the place of starting. Passed William Creek 3 Sweetwater again and for the last time 5 Marsh and spring Old chimney one on the other side of the marsh 12 here we camped care has to be taken or horses will get mired (Paci Pick) or (Pacifick) Spring. Thursday23. June left Pacifick this morning past dry sandy 11 mi. past the old Oregon road 6 camped on little Sandy 8. Friday 24/64. Found a good road to Big Sandy 8 mi., went down 2 miles and crossed. Went down the river, could see it occasionally and came to it in 15 miles and camped. Saturday 25. Green River 10. Crossed by ferry, went 1 1/2 miles and camped. Sunday 26. Bad road, hilly to Ham Fork no water 20 camped. Monday June 27/64. Passed several streams do not know how many 25. Tuesday 28. Passed Fort Bridger. Was sick and did not notice the road much. passed several streams 25. Wednesday 29. Hilly road, passed two small streams and camped on Bear River and found ripe strawberries 24. Thursday 30. Crossed two small streams about knoon, passed over a high hill and down a small stream and camped on it for the knight 24 Echo Canyon. July 1, 1864. Friday went down this stream to Weber River and went up the river about 8 or 10 miles went up a small stream 10 or 12 miles. Sunday 3. Traveled about 12 miles a part of the way up a canien (canyon) and part of the way canien (canyon). Commenced to board with Mr. Howard July 3rd. July 4, 1864. Commenced our journey as usual going down a small stream arrived at Salt Lake City. Tuesday 5th. Laid over. Wednesday 6. Went south from the city about 18 miles and camped by a spring poor feed. Thursday 7. Went about 18. Camped at Camp Floyd. July 8 to 19. At Camp Floyd. Sickness continued to Aug 17 left here and went to Stockton. End of Diary
