Written by Peter Felber, Pastor, Reformed Church, Ref. Pfarramt, Beggingen, Switzerland, 1984: The name "Leupp" is a name that still appears today in Beggingen, although sometimes it is written as Leup or Loupp. Vogelsanger is also a name which appears today there. Thus, these families have lived in this region for many generations. Until 1644, the parish of Beggingen belonged to the parish of Schleitheim, a neighboring village about 6 kilometers from Beggingen. About 2 1/2 miles. All baptisms and marriages were recorded in the church books of Schleitheim until 1644. Ine Beggingen, there are only copies of these original books. The church books of Beggingen began in 1644 when it became a parrish in its own right. On the first page of the church book of Beggingen is the name of our ancestor, Melchior Leup. Melchior Leup was baptized as the 9th child of this new parish. From 1618 to 1648, there was a terrible war called the Dreissigjagrige Krieg 30 year War. Which was also a religious war. During this war, the region of Schaffhausen and the valley in which Beggingen and Schleitheim are located were involved. In 1633, troops of the Catholic party burned down the entire village of Beggingen, including the church with its records. In 1642, a new church was built in Beggingen and 1644, they got their own pastor, Rev. Kochlin. He began the church book and baptized Melchoir. They were certainly of the Reformed Church and can be said to have a part of the Reformation movement. After 1529, the religion for the state of Schaffhausen changed from Catholic to the Reformed faith of the famous Huldrych Zwingli in Zurich. In those times, when a state changed its confession (religion) all the inhabitants of that state had no choice but to become members of the same confession. Marriage notes for Hans Leup-Leupp-Loupp and Ursula Vogelsanger: Marriage is recorded in the church book of Schleitheim where the records for the parrish of Benningen, Switzerland were kept until 1644. The family worshiped in the Beggingen Reformed Church, Ref. Pfarramt, Benningen, Switzerland. Eight children of Hans and Ursula are recorded at the church. Michail Wanner was Godfather for all the children and Emma Schudel was their Godmother.
