Jens Jensen was born in Voldby parish, Skanderborg county, Gjern the district, Denmark. He was christened in the Lutheran church in Voldby on Nov. 28, 1787. His parents were Jens (Mason) Jensen and Kierstin Nielsen. Jens Jensen’s father was considered a peasant. In 1802, when Jens was 15, he was automatically enrolled in the military. During the time the war between England and Denmark had broke out. It started 1801. During his military days, he met a young lady when he was stationed and registered in Hammel, Skanderborg, Gjern District. Jens was guarding the border of Gjern District. It was in this area that he met the young lady known as Kjersten Pedersen. Kjersten and Jens fell in love. They dearly wanted to be married. Since Jens was in the military and active duty in the 3rd Infantry, they were not allowed to be married. On the 29 July 1811 Kjersten gave birth to their only son Peder Jensen. Peder was born out of wedlock. Kjersten at this time was living with Jens, but was not allowed to travel with him. Kjersten’s family did not approve of this and they considered it a disgrace to their family. It is a disgrace to raise a child alone as a single mother. After 6 months out on active duty, Kjersten decided to moved back with her parents. They had the lower farm estate, which would make it possible for her to work. Her parents kept encouraging her to find a father for Peder and would talk of a neighbor whom was left a widower with children him also being in the military. Just before moving back with her parents, Jens Isaksen’s wife had passed away. They started courting and were married in 1815. Jens Jensen served his country quite well and lost contact with Kjersten. Kjersten was busy being a housewife and mother. Kjersten and Jens Isaksen helped her family with the small farm raising some animals and some smaller crops of vegetables. This was their family’s source of income. They had enough to survive, with all of the family members to help. Kjersten’s family was doing well and on the 20 October 1817, while living in Voldby, Skanderborg amt, Gjern Herred, Denmark, Kjersten gave birth to another baby boy and they named him Niels Jensen. Jens Jensen came home in 1815 because the war was finally over. When Jens Jensen returned he located Kjersten to find out that she had married Jens Isaksen. Jens Jensen was very devastated at this news. Jens Jensen knew he needed to move on. Not wanting to spend the remaining portion of his life alone, Jens met a lady by the name of Karen Jensen. They were married on 13 Oct 1815 in Hammel, Skanderborg amt, Gjern Herred, Denmark. Record has not been yet found on what happened to this marriage; the bottom line is that they were not together anymore. The beginning of 1817 Jens Jensen met another lady by the name of Ellen Margrethe Ovesdater (Ovesen). They were married 24 May 1817 in Hammel, Skanderborg amt, Gjern Herred, Denmark. Jens Jensen and Ellen Margrethe were recorded in the 1834, 1840, 1845 and 1850 census records all of which they were living in Hammel, Skanderborg amt, Gjern Herred, Denmark. On the 16 December 1852 in Hammel, Skanderborg amt, Gjern Herred, Denmark, Jens Jensen passed away and was buried on the 22 December 1852. Ellen Margrethe Ovesdatter, his wife passed away on 11 April 1860 in Hammel also. Kjersten Pedersen passed away on the 15 May 1849 while living in Skannerup, Skanderborg, Houlbjerg Herred,Denmark.
