Obituary abstract: John F. Degner 87, for many years a resident of Wonewoc, Juneau County died early Thursday morning, August 12, 1971, at St. Joseph's Memorial Hospital in Hillsboro, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held in St. Paul Saturday, Aug 14 th. Burial was in Mt. Vernon Cemetery...John F. Degner, son of Herman Degner, Sr., and Theresa Wegner Degner, was born June 26, 1884 at Ixonia, Jefferson Co, WI. When he was a small child the Degner family moved to the Hillsboro area. He attended the Hillsboro Schools and grew to young manhood in this locality. He was married November 29, 1907 to Miss Minnie Wachlin, daughter, of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Wachlin of the Town of Wonewoc. The wedding ceremony took place in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Wonewoc. The Degner's established their home on a farm in the Township of Wonewoc, Juneau County, about three miles east of Hillsboro. There they became well-known members of the community and through the years gave influential leadership and cooperation in many endeavors that have been important to the advancement and welfare of that community. Mrs. Degner passed away October 21, 1961. Mr. Degner was a member of St. Paul v. Lutheran Church at Hillsboro and for many years served as a member of the Church Council. For fifteen years he was also a member of the School Board of the Hofmeister Dist. of the Town of Wonewoc. His successive reelection was indicative f his excellent administration in the office to which he was elected and also of the high esteem and good will of the electors of the district. Surviving Mr. Degner are: one daughter, Mrs. Harold (Vera) Steffen of Wonewoc; one son, Laurence Degner of Wonewoc; 6 grandchildren; one g g child; many other relatives and a large number of friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Degner; one son, John; his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Herman Degner, Sr.; seven brothers, Frank, Herman, William, August, Albert, Julius and Carl; and three sisters who passed away in infancy. Mr. John F. Degner was the last surviving member of the family of Mr. & Mrs. Herman Degner who had come to this area in the mid-1880's. They were immigrants from Germany and had resided at Ixonia for a few years before coming to the Hillsboro locality. Those who knew Mr. Degner will always remember his kindness, his pleasant manner and his very sincere concern for people, their happiness and welfare. He was a good neighbor who was always ready to help in every way possible in time of need or emergency and he was a loyal, understanding friend. Mr. Degner was a man of very sincere faith and his loyalty and service to his church reflected the interest he had in its precepts, its influence and its progress. His interest in youth and education in their behalf was indicated in the years he served as a member of his local district school board. The memory of his great devotion to his family, his many years of kindness, guidance and practical helpfulness, his faith, leadership and the many ways in which he aided numerous person will always be treasured in the remembrance of those who have been so greatly bereaved by his death.
