La Iglesia de San Fernando Rey también se denomina Catedral. Esta catedral fué eregida el 12 de septiembre de 1880. No fué sino hasta 1937 que se comenzó a erigir otras parroquias en Resistencia tales como Asunción de la Santísima Virgen, Nuestra Señora del Carmen, San Francisco Javier, San José Obrero, San Roque y Santa Teresita. La Diócesis de Resistencia comprendía toda la Provincia del Chaco y fué eregida como diócesis en junio de 1939. La diócesis fué elevada a arquidiócesis el 1º de abril de 1984 comprendiendo los departamentos de Bermejo, General Dónovan, Libertad, Libertador General San Martín, Presidencia de la Plaza, Primero de Mayo, San Fernando, Sargento Cabral y Tapenagá de la provincia del Chaco.

Resistencia es la cabecera del Departamento de San Fernando y la capital de la Provincia del Chaco.
