"'The Roster of Union Soldiers, 1861-1865' is a printed copy, for the first time, of the index to the Compiled Military Service Records (CMSR) residing in the National Archives. This index is the key to the records of the individual Union volunteer soldiers (there is no comparable set of records for Civil War regular army soldiers), abstracted after the war from the official documents created during the war" -- Intro.

The roster is arranged by state (or by regiment), then alphabetically, with sections for troops not raised by the states.
