Chiefly, a personal journal from 1859 to 1887 of Henry William Ravenel who was born on May 19, 1814 in South Carolina. He was the son of Dr. Henry Ravenel who was born on May 23, 1790. Henry William's mother died when he was two years old. In 1832, he graduated from South Carolina College with an A. B. degree. He began serious botanical work when was about twenty-five years of age. Between 1846 and 1856, he gave his attention chiefly to the collection and identification of fungi, a work which resulted in a five volume publication. He later became a botanist of international reputation. His journal is an intimate daily record of his personal life which comprises an unusual picture of the troubled times in which he lived. He provides observations for the years preceeding and through the Civil War. He was interested in political affairs and personalities. He lived most of his life in Aiken, South Carolina. He died in July, 1887. Many of his descendants lived in South Carolina and elsewhere.
