James Jones was born in 1762 in Charles County, Maryland. Sarah Ravenscroft was born March 18, 1776 in Hampshire County, West Virginia. They were married May 18, 1791 in Allegany County, Maryland. They had eleven children. James served in the Revolutionary War before he married. After his marriage he lived in several different counties of Virginia and West Virginia, dying November 10, 1850 in Ritchie County, West Virginia. Descendants and relatives lived in West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and elsewhere.
