Notes

Chiefly a study of two Carter lines, descendants of Joseph Carter, Sr. Joseph Carter migrated from Maryland to Virginia and then to Green County, Tennessee, where he died in 1811. Record chiefly traces line of descent to two of his great grandchildren and some of their descendants.

Lewis Carter, Jr. (1828-1904) was born in Monroe County, Tennessee, the son of Lewis Carter, Sr. and grandson of Joseph Carter, Jr. He and his wife, Nancy (1827-1914), were married in Kentucky, ca. 1848. They had at least five children. The family returned to Tennessee and settled in Meigs County near Georgetown. Most descendants listed lived in Tennessee.

Emily (Emeline) Carter (1818-1900) in Tennessee, the daughter of John Carter and the granddaughter of Micajah Carter. She married John Andrew Hickman (1816-1910) in 1839. They had nine children, ca. 1839-1881. John Andrew and Emily Hickman died in Bradley County, Tennessee, and are buried in the Lee Cemetery west of Mt. Zion Church. Most descendants listed lived in Tennessee.
