"In 1903 Special Agent Charles P. McNichols compiled a census roll of the Indians of the Flathead Reservation in Montana .... On January 12, 1905, the Commissioner of Indian Affairs instructed Special Agent Thomas Downs ... to compile a new roll of the members of the Flathead, Kutenai, Pend d'Oreille, Kalispel, and Spokane Tribes who lived on the Flathead Reservation. Most of the records comprising this publication were created during Downs' investigation, but the McNichols roll and the documents submitted with the suspended applications also are included. Supplements to the Downs Roll are included as well." Introd.
