After British settlements in the 17th century, the Island of Anguilla was administered as part of the Leeward Islands. From 1825 it became associated with St. Kitts and was ultimately incorporated in the colony of St. Christopher (St. Kitts)-Nevis. In 1967 Anguilla seceded from its association with St. Kitts-Nevis and in 1969 became a separate dependency of Great Britain.
