The card index is filmed in TWO columns. The filmed must be moved to the side to view both columns. The film reader head must be rotated to read one of the columns.

Book indexes do not index to ships' lists, but consist of alphabetical listings of passengers arranged chronologically by arrival date. Mostly consists of name, age, nationality, where booked to, passage taken, etc.
