William Cole was born in Warwick County, Virginia, in 1638. He was an attorney and held important government positions in colonial Virginia. He married 1) before 1674, name unknown; 2) Ann Digges (1658-1686), daughter of Governor Edward Digges, in 1681; and 3) Marthat Lear (1668-1704), daughter of Col. John Lear, in 1687. He had seven children. He died at "Boldrup", Warwick County, in 1694.

Captain Armistead Beresford Cole, a descendant of William Cole and a son of Samuel and Lucinda Melton Cole, was born 19 Oct. 1822 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. He moved from Alabama to Pontotoc County, Mississippi, with his father in 1836. He married Sarah Jane Turner (1824-1876), daughter of Dr. Robert and Sophia W. Dale Turner, at Pontotoc, Mississippi, 20 Oct. 1846. They had six children. He served in the Confederate States Army in 1861-1865. He moved to Cherokee County, Texas, in 1870; and died at Larissa, Cherokee County, 29 Apr. 1873. Descendants lived in Texas, Mississippi, California, Florida and elsewhere.
