Notes

Microfilm of original records in the Municipal Archives in New York, New York.

Many records are light and faded and difficult to read. Some records are out of focus and cannot be adjusted.

Printed index to New York City deaths including Manhattan after 1890 is cataloged under: New York (New York). Department of Health. Index to deaths, New York City, 1888-1965.

Beginning in 1888, the certificate numbers started each year with certificate number 1.

The index is typewritten and handwritten.

The index includes age at time of death, date of death, and number of the death certificate.

Death certicates also list date and place of burial.

Almost all retakes of index cards occur at the first of the rolls. Most index ending title targets do not give the correct alphabetical end points. Filming went on beyond the last entry on the target. See the contents listed with the film call numbers for the correct alphabetical end points.

There is no filming gap between items and no film target board indicating item numbers.

Some certificates are located in books and the date of death is in the inner margin and may be hard to read.

Some films have large filming gaps between records. Check the certificate number and scroll to the point where it should be on the film. Do not stop looking when there is a filming gap.

About this record

This screen shows the complete catalog entry of the title you selected.

The Film/Digital Notes contain a description of the microfilm or microfiche numbers. Some family history centers and libraries maintain collections of previously loaned microfilms or microfiche. A camera icon indicates items that are digitally available online.

Generally, catalog entries are written in the same language as the original record they describe.

Reasons why microfilms may not yet be available digitally on FamilySearch.org include:

  • The microfilm may be scheduled for future scanning.
  • The microfilm may have been scanned, but have a contractual, data privacy, or other restriction preventing access. FamilySearch makes every effort to enable access dependent on decisions of record custodians and applicable laws.
