Notes

Microfilm of original records in the Hampshire County Record Office, Winchester.

Text in Latin and English.

Includes indexes for some years individually.

If the probate document you want is not found among the records of this court, search the next higher jurisdiction. This can be found in the Author-title catalog under the title: Church of England. Province of Canterbury. Prerogative Court. It will also be found in the Locality catalog by the same title under the locality: England - Probate records.

The Consistory court is also known as the Bishop's court and the wills are referred to as "bishopric wills".

This court has jurisdiction in Hampshire and Isle of Wight. Before 1858, Hampshire was in the province of Canterbury and diocese of Winchester. A number of Surrey wills are to be found in the Consistory Court until the early 17th century.

Registered wills, vols. A-D, F, J, K, 1501-1559 are combined with the Archdeaconry Court of Winchester.

The first set of Consistory court wills listed on this record (194 reels), was filmed in 1958, with some additions and refilmings in 1982. Since that time, the original documents have been flattened, re-arranged in better order and some missing documents have been interfiled. They have also been paged and a master card index has been completed. The improved set was filmed by the Society in 1990 and follows the first set on this record. The first set is on 35 mm. film, but the second set is filmed at a higher reduction (42x) and requires a high magnification reader.

About this record

This screen shows the complete catalog entry of the title you selected.

The Film/Digital Notes contain a description of the microfilm or microfiche numbers. Some family history centers and libraries maintain collections of previously loaned microfilms or microfiche. A camera icon indicates items that are digitally available online.

Generally, catalog entries are written in the same language as the original record they describe.

Reasons why microfilms may not yet be available digitally on FamilySearch.org include:

  • The microfilm may be scheduled for future scanning.
  • The microfilm may have been scanned, but have a contractual, data privacy, or other restriction preventing access. FamilySearch makes every effort to enable access dependent on decisions of record custodians and applicable laws.
