Cherokee Indian rolls dealing with the Dawes Commission

The Dawes Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes was created in 1898 to enroll individuals as citizens of one of the five tribes. The commission reviewed enrollment applications and abstracted the information onto cards. "R" designations on numbers represent refused applications. "D" designations indicate determined or granted applications. "C" designations represent cancelled applications. The Final Rolls which resulted from the enrollment process were later used as the standard for proving enrollment. When the tribal governments were dissolved in 1908, parcels of tribal land or allotments were granted to enrolled citizens of the five tribes including freedmen, who were former (African-American) slaves.
